KUCHING, Feb 28: Leaders of political parties with representatives in the Dewan Rakyat will be given the opportunity to nominate a member of parliament (MP) of their choice as the future prime minister.
Comptroller of the Royal Household for Istana Negara, Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, in an official statement today, stated that this was because the Yang di-Pertuan Agong was still not convinced that any particular MP commanded the support of majority of MPs to be the next premier.
The King had personally interviewed 222 MPs over the course of two days in an effort to handle the unprecedented political crisis stemming from Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s resignation as prime minister.
“Yang di-Pertuan Agong will continue to find a solution in line with the Federal Constitution for the well-being of the people and the country,” he said.
He added that the King also noted the decision made by Dewan Rakyat Speaker on not calling a special Parliament session to choose the next prime minister on March 2. āDayakDaily
