Political analyst: Prime Minister calls the shots for GE15, not Umno’s ‘Top 5’

Prof Dr Jayum Jawan

KUCHING, Oct 2: The decision to call for the 15th General Election (GE15) lies with the Prime Minister, not the United Malays National Organisation’s (Umno) ‘Top 5′, says political analyst Prof Datuk Dr Jayum Jawan.

He was referring to media reports on an Umno top leaders’ meeting dated Sept 30, where they had reached a consensus on the dissolution of Parliament which will pave the way for GE15.

Umno’s ‘Top 5’ refers to president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, and three vice-presidents Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, and Dato Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Dr Jayum noted that the decision to call for elections is not within the authority of the ‘Top 5’ UMNO leaders but resides solely in Ismail Sabri as the Prime Minister.

“In any case, the final decision lies with the King, who must agree to based on His Majesty’s discretionary power.

“The Prime Minister (Ismail Sabri) is being respectful of his party bosses by listening, but that doesn’t mean he has to listen to them,” he said in a statement today. — DayakDaily
