KUCHING, Oct 2: Chung Hua Middle Schools No. 1 and No. 3 were announced as champions in the Gold Ribbon sculpture competition in Lower Secondary Category A and Upper Secondary Category B respectively.

Chung Hua Middle School No. 1 won with its sculpture titled ‘Sayangilah Kanak-Kanak Kanser’ (Love the Cancer Children) which depicts a heart with wings and a pair of grey hands holding a golden ribbon.

The sculpture was made from repurposed newspaper, plastic, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, plastic caps and boxes.

The 5-person team ‘Semangat Cintailah Kitar Semula’ which put together this heartfelt model comprised Jerry Lim Xin Yu, Amanda Chai Pei Wen, Elene Chiu Zi Yin, Koh Wen Xin, and Ling Tzai Zhang.

Chung Hua Middle School No. 1 was the first prize winner of Gold Ribbon sculpture competition Category A.

Meanwhile, Chung Hua Middle School No. 3’s sculpture titled ‘A Gifted Child’, features a mannequin with an ordinary looking body, but with damaged and malfunctioning internal organs.

The repurposed materials used include old newspapers, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, straws, cotton, satay sticks, bulbs, boxes, plastic bags and cups, containers, toilet paper rolls and pipes.

Their well-written artwork description read: “We want to illustrate the pain that children feel in their bodies and the disruption of organ functions when they are battling childhood cancer. We hope that everyone can help them and focus on childhood cancer prevention efforts.

“A cancer survivor once said, ‘I learned that courage is not the absence of fear. The brave is not a person who does not feel fear, but one who overcomes it.’ These children are no doubt, people of courage.”

The students in the ‘Go Go Go Group’ team which created this sculpture are Jordan Lin, Josharisson, Josh Lee Yeu Yang, Edison Phui Xue Hang, and Cleon Lim Ruo Feng.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng attended the ceremony as the guest-of-honour, accompanied by Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) honorary secretary Mary Kiu.

The competition was organised by SCCS in conjunction with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM) in September to heighten awareness of childhood cancer among local communities and raise support for children diagnosed with cancer.

In addition to the sculpture exhibition, there are also other activities at SCCS booths including kids’ colouring, face and hand painting as well a balloon twisting workshop at Atrium E of the mall until 9pm today. — DayakDaily
