KUCHING, Dec 7: The Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) Bukit Aman will intensify efforts to combat drug smuggling at airports and key ports in Sarawak.
In a news report by TVS, director Datuk Seri Khaw Kok Chin revealed that investigations showed that the primary methods of smuggling drugs into Sarawak involve air and sea transport, with some cases also using courier services.
“However, the scale of the smuggling issue here is not as severe as in Peninsular Malaysia. Compared to other states on the peninsula, Sarawak remains under control, with cases involving smaller quantities and lower values than the large drug busts worth RM33 million or more that occur elsewhere.
“In Sarawak, while there have been arrests, the drugs seized are relatively small in quantity, with most being brought in from Peninsular Malaysia to be supplied to neighbouring countries,” he told a press conference following the Graduation Parade of the 73rd Series 8/2024 Basic Policing Training Programme (PLAK) for Constables at the Kuching Police Training Centre (Pulapol) today.
Khaw emphasised that Miri has been identified as one of the hotspots frequently used by syndicates to smuggle drugs into Sarawak.
The high demand for drugs and significantly higher prices in neighbouring countries—sometimes more than ten times the market price in Sarawak—make Miri a key entry point for illicit substances.
He urged police personnel, including members of the General Operation Force (GOF), to further tighten border controls and continue providing intelligence on smuggling and drug distribution to the nearest NCID unit.
“This will enable better coordination in dismantling syndicates and apprehending those involved,” he stressed. — DayakDaily
