KUCHING, Jan 13: A 20-year old man in Kuching was arrested by police for operating an illicit call centre in Jalan Stutong Baru.
Kuching District Police Chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the arrest took place during a raid at a premise in Jalan Stutong Baru yesterday (Jan 12).
He said police also seized a laptop, a router, a modem, four mobile phones and various other equipment.
“Initial investigation found that the call centre had been operational since August 2023, engaging in the promotion of online gambling through phone calls, WhatsApp, WeChat and Telegram mobile applications, including through a Facebook page.
“Based on the transaction record, the syndicate is believed to make a daily profit of around RM2,000 and can reach up to RM60,000 per month,” he disclosed in a statement today.
Ahsmon further informed that efforts are underway to trace the owner of the premises, and the suspect is currently in police custody until Jan 15.
“An investigation paper has been initiated under Section 4(1)(g) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953,” he said.
Ahsmon also urged the local community to collaborate with the police by providing any information related to online gambling activities in Kuching by reporting it to the nearest police station. – DayakDaily
