KUCHING, April 30: A 15-year-old local girl has lodged a police report alleging an incident of sexual harassment and outraging of modesty by a man while they were inside a car at Jalan Camar here.
Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu today confirmed that the report had been received and that investigations are currently underway.
“The case is being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to one year, a fine, or both.
“It is also being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to five years in jail, a fine, or both,” he said in a statement.
Alexson also advised the public against making speculations or spreading unverified information that could disrupt investigations.
Police investigations into the case are ongoing.
He urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward by contacting the Kuching District Police Headquarters (IPD) Control Centre at 082-244444 or directly reaching out to the investigating officer ASP Tan Kian Kok at 010-5661576.
The matter first came to light in a statement issued earlier today by Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Dato Sri Nancy Shukri, who urged the public to be courageous in speaking out against all forms of sexual harassment.
She made the call following a viral incident involving the alleged harassment of a 15-year-old girl by an e-hailing driver. A widely circulated video on social media purportedly shows the driver asking the teenage passenger to remove her hijab while she was on her way home. — DayakDaily
