Police investigate couple for suspected child abuse

MIRI, Aug 20: Police summoned a couple down to the Miri Central Police Station for an alleged child abuse following the death of their seven-month-old son today.

Bite marks were discovered on the infant’s body and he appeared to be malnourished and underweight.

Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah disclosed that the infant was brought to the Emergency Unit of the Miri Hospital around 5am today but was later pronounced dead at two hours later (at 7am).


“The child had stopped breathing and medical personnel had tried to resuscitate the baby but he was ultimately pronounced dead,” he said.

Police personnel arrive at Miri Hospital after being alerted on a suspected child abuse case.

“Police was alerted of the suspicious elements found on the body and thus opened an investigation into the child’s death, suspected of an abuse,” he added.

According to sources, the infant was rushed to Miri Hospital by the parents after he fell unconscious.

Lim revealed that there were no arrest made yet as police were waiting for the post-mortem result.

“We called the parents to have their statements recorded and helped us with investigation,” he added.

The infant’s father,36, is a cook, while his wife is a full-time housewife. The couple rented a room of a house somewhere in Permyjaya.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.— DayakDaily
