Police confirm two killed in Sarikei road accident on March 7

SARIKEI, March 8: The police have confirmed that a fatal road accident at KM451 of Jalan Betong/Sarikei/Meradong near Pakan junction here at 11:10 pm last night (March 7) has claimed two lives.

The deceased were identified as Yap Ah Tek, 69 (driver), and Lantau Meling, 96.


Sarikei District Police Chief Supt Aswandy Anis said the accident occurred after the victims’ Toyota Fortuner heading from Kuching to Pakan went out of control and collided with a trailer lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

Investigating officer Insp Ahmad Mustaqim Idris added that Yap was pronounced dead at the scene while Lantau succumbed to her injuries in an ambulance en route to Sarikei Hospital.

Apart from the deceased, there were two other female victims in the Toyota Fortuner aged 47 and 64, who suffered minor injuries.

Members of the public who were present at the scene had helped to extricate and gave initial treatment to the two living victims during the incident.

“Meanwhile, the trailer lorry was driven by a 30-year-old man who was accompanied by an attendant. Both of them did not suffer any injuries,” Mustaqim clarified.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of Road Transport Act 1987. — DayakDaily
