SIBU, Feb 26: Sarawak has recorded 2,958 commercial crime cases, incurring losses of over RM117 million in 2023, says Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata.

He added this was an increase from the figures in 2022, with 2,461 cases and losses of RM66 million and that it was a cause for concern.

He said this during a community policing programme today.

As for this year’s statistics, Sarawak has recorded 240 commercial crime cases involving RM7.7 million in losses up to January.

At the same time, he advised the public not to become victims of cyber or commercial crimes and that the government has provided several facilities, such as the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) line at 997, to check and verify information regarding cyber fraud.

“The public can also download the Whoscall mobile application to know whether the number (that contacted them) is a scam.

On drugs, he said that the police are always committed to cracking down on drug trafficking and abuse to ensure that society remains safe, peaceful, and prosperous.

According to statistics in 2023, he said 1,152 arrests were recorded in Sibu district compared to 895 arrests in 2022.

“From the statistics, we see that this drug crime is indeed a problem that must be dealt with immediately,’ he said.
