Police bust illegal gambling call centre in Batu Kawah, arrest 12

KUCHING, Oct 18: Twelve people were arrested by the police for allegedly operating an illegal call centre for online gambling purposes today.

State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief, SAC Denis Leong, revealed the arrests were made during a raid of a terrace house along Jalan Batu Kawa by a team of D7 police from the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK Sarawak).

One local woman, six foreign women and five foreign men were detained.

“Those arrested were aged between 18 to 28-years-old, and 11 laptop units were also confiscated during the raid,” he disclosed in a press statement today.

According to Leong, the call centre was found to have been in operation for about five months, raking in an estimated profit of RM100,000 to RM150,000 per month.

“Since January until October this year, a total of 676 premises involved in illegal gambling activities have had their electricity supply cut off in a joint operation with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB),” he added. — DayakDaily
