KANOWIT, Aug 9: Quick action by the police led to the arrest of seven men in connection with a fracas which happened in Machan on Monday.
A 2 minute 30 second video clip of the attack by a group of people armed with sticks on another group had gone viral on social media.
Kanowit district police chief, Deputy Superintendent (DSP) Tega Bilong said today that the fight between the two groups was due to a misunderstanding over salary payment.
He added that they had detained the suspects following reports lodged by the two groups.
“We received the first report at 2.45pm yesterday followed by another report by the other group at 3.15pm on the same day.
“Subsequently, five men aged between 20 to 45 were arrested in Sibu at 6.30pm and two from the other group aged 21 and 57 were nabbed soon after that” he said.
He said one of the men suffered injuries to his hand after being hit by a four-wheel-drive vehicle belonging to the other group.
DSP Tega advised the public not to speculate on the case as investigations are still ongoing.
The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal code for rioting in public. — DayakDaily
