KUCHING, June 22: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described the evolving relationship between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and Sarawak’s own oil and gas company, Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) as a “win-win” partnership—one that reflects Malaysia’s changing landscape and Sarawak’s growing capabilities.

Speaking at the Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak Celebration 2025 gala dinner at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) this evening, Anwar acknowledged that initial friction between the two entities was expected, given Petronas’ long-established role under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA74).

“At first, of course, the relationship was unsteady. PETRONAS has long been recognised under PDA74 as a national oil company—not a Peninsular company—but as Sarawak’s capacity and awareness grew, the time came for the State to establish its own entity,” he said.

He noted that today’s Malaysia is no longer the Malaysia of the 1970s or 1980s, and that Sarawak now has a new generation of highly qualified professionals.

“Many of Sarawak’s young people have gained the necessary skills and exposure working in PETRONAS, Shell, and other major companies. So it’s only fair that Petros be given room—especially in managing gas offtake and distribution within Sarawak. This means win-win situation,” he added.

Anwar stressed that ongoing discussions between the parties take time, especially as they involve longstanding foundations and structures.

“These negotiations take time because we are working from existing foundations. But I leave it to the ministers, the management, and the officers involved to carry it forward,” he said.

However, he expressed full confidence in Sarawak’s leadership and commitment to striking the right balance.

“I believe Sarawak Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg), the Sarawak ministers, and our friends here know that the State’s interests must be protected, just as the country’s interests must also be preserved. That’s the same spirit I carry.

“I don’t want the country as a whole to suffer losses or pressure, and I also don’t want Sarawakians to feel unappreciated or sidelined,” he emphasised.

Anwar said this spirit of mutual respect and cooperation ultimately led to the formalisation of agreements between PETRONAS and PETROS.

“Our development in the oil and gas industry must include PETRONAS, and for Sarawak, it must also include PETROS.

“If we accept that reality—that we need both parties to work together to uplift Sarawak and the nation—I am confident we will move forward safely and successfully,” he stated. — DayakDaily
