KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 25: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has engaged in discussions with the Philippine government to harness Sarawak’s potential as an energy hub, with plans to channel energy to the Philippines via Sabah and the Nusantara Capital City in East Kalimantan.

“This year, Sarawak aims to export electricity through an undersea cable to Singapore via Peninsular Malaysia.

“On the southern side, from Sarawak to Sabah, I have also held discussions with the Philippines, so that energy from Sarawak to Sabah can be extended to the Nusantara Capital City, which has now been launched, and ultimately to the Philippines,” he said.

He said this during his speech at the Malaysian Institute of Planners Planning Excellence Awards 2024 (MIPPEA2024), held at a prominent hotel last night (Jan 24), as reported by TVS.

In addition, Anwar highlighted that his recent working visit to Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2025 Annual Summit had been maximised to promote ASEAN’s message to international leaders.

He shared that the meetings with global leaders aim to showcase the region’s strengths, especially in light of Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair this year.

“I’m bringing this message of ASEAN because the region is home to 700 million people. I’ve been discussing the ASEAN energy grid, which involves Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines,” he said.

This marks Malaysia’s fifth time chairing ASEAN, having previously held the position in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015. — DayakDaily
