KUCHING, Dec 21: There will be several announcements to improve Sarawak’s rights as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) by early January next year, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the announcements would involve a few improvements that are far better than suggested to resolve most of the MA63 issues raised by the Sarawak government.

“God-willing, by early January, we will announce some improvements which are far better to resolve a big portion of the issues raised although there are other issues, especially those involving legislation and law amendments.

“Those issues have to be delayed until the next Parliament sitting, but some big issues we can approve (in the Cabinet),” said Anwar at a press conference after a Cabinet meeting in Putrajaya today.

Meanwhile, Anwar announced that the Cabinet has approved to transfer regulatory powers on Sabah’s gas supply from the Federal government to the Sabah state government.

“Previously it was under Petronas at the Federal level, but now it’s transferred to the Sabah government.

“This happened to Sarawak before and now the same goes to the Sabah state government,” he added.

In terms of procedure, he said the date of implementation awaits approval from the King, but the Cabinet has approved the transfer of powers. — Dayakdaily
