KLANG, Aug 20: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to make several important announcements, including one on the eve of National Day on Aug 30 and another during the Malaysia Day celebrations in Kuching on Sept 16.
However, he did not provide further details on the nature of the announcements.
“I will listen and seek other views and, by Aug 31, I will make one important announcement for the country. Then I will go to Kuching on Sept 16 for Malaysia Day.
“So, on the eve of Aug 31, there will be one announcement, another on Sept 16 and another in early October during the tabling of the Budget,” he said at the Temu Anwar session held in conjunction with the opening ceremony of Himpunan Anak Muda Antarabangsa (HAMKA) 2026 here today.
He was responding to a student’s question on the government’s efforts to safeguard the welfare and financial security of youths working in the gig economy.
The Prime Minister said the government was strengthening protections for gig economy workers through the establishment of the Malaysian Gig Economy Commission (SEGiM) and the introduction of a new bill concerning small businesses.
While acknowledging views that existing assistance remained insufficient, Anwar said the government was committed to enhancing protection for the group.
Meanwhile, Anwar said the government would facilitate access to financing for graduates seeking to venture into business, including through the National Entrepreneurial Group Economic Fund (Tekun).
He said the existing requirement for applicants to have an established business track record before obtaining financing should be reviewed in view of changing economic conditions and employment trends.
“So, all I can say here is that I will listen and look into the matter. If we have the capacity, we will do our best for the youth,” he said. — Bernama
