KUCHING, July 14: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has held a discussion with SpaceX chief executive officer (CEO) Elon Musk over a video conference today on the potential of using the company’s satellite network to enhance internet speeds and expand coverage, particularly in rural areas in Malaysia.
During the video conference at the Prime Minister’s Office at 9.30am today, Anwar expressed his enthusiasm regarding SpaceX’s Starlink satellite service and its potential to bolster internet connectivity, especially in remote regions.
“It will only require physical infrastructure and minimal land to increase the global internet network.
“This initiative involving the Starlink satellite network will increase capacity (of Malaysia) and well-being of people, especially in terms of education and potential for agriculture technology as well as to generate income,” he said in a statement posted on his social media today.
Anwar warmly welcomed Musk’s interest and investment decision in Malaysia, expressing his appreciation for Musk’s willingness to visit the country.
Additionally, he extended his congratulations to Musk, who is also Tesla CEO, on the opening of Tesla’s head office, experience centre, and service centre for electric vehicles in Selangor.
Anwar emphasised that Malaysia will continue to strengthen its commitment in the matter of net zero carbon emissions as early as 2050.
“Malaysia has a comprehensive plan and ecosystem, and competitive resources in supporting the clean energy industry, including electric mobility,” he said.
Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz and Minister of Communications and Digital Fahmi Fadzil also participated in the video conference. — DayakDaily
