KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3: The Federal government is committed to ensure Malaysia Airlines’ (MAS) comeback in light of the recent controversy regarding the national carrier’s operational challenges.

Speaking during the 30th Khazanah Nasional Berhad anniversary celebration today, Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim said efforts to rehabilitate (MAS) have begun but it would take time.

“On the government’s part, in almost every weekly Cabinet meeting, we will discuss on rehabilitation and reformation; on how to save these national institutions (Khazanah and MAS).

“But believe us when we say that the government remain completely committed to ensure the success of the airline because it is our national airline, and it has to make a comeback to perform,” he said.

MAS is owned entirely by the Malaysian government, through sovereign wealth fund, Khazanah Nasional.

Khazanah is the sole ordinary shareholder of Malaysia Airlines Bhd.

Anwar who is also the Khazanah chairman, further said non-transparent political decisions in the country giving opportunities to one or two cronies has affected the once prestigious MAS.

“Because of those mistakes, the company is burdened to us until now.

“Don’t erase that historic fact where decisions were made with the intention of defending the interests of these cronies and marginalising the interests of the country and the people,” he added.

MAS had recently landed in hot water after it had experienced a series of technical issues affecting hundreds of passengers following issues such as engine failures, emergency landings, flight diversions, aircraft maintenance, supply chain disruptions and technical problems with aircraft manufacturers. — DayakDaily
