KUCHING, Nov 24: Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that next Monday (Nov 28) will be a public holiday nationwide.

Anwar, who was sworn in as Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister today, said this was a promise he made to Malaysians that he wanted to keep.

“My main focus is the economy. I am grateful for the situation today and the confidence (receive whereby) the ringgit strengthened, so has Bursa (Malaysia).

“So with this I have decided that tomorrow…it (public holiday) cannot be done, but it will be replaced by next Monday,” he told a press conference at Sungai Long Club House in Selangor which was streamed live on social media tonight.

Anwar said he has discussed this with the Chief Secretary to the government and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that he had promised last Monday following the conclusion of the 15th General Election (GE15) would be public holiday.

“But on (last) Monday, matters were not settled yet (on the formation of the new government). So today, it has been settled and I will keep my promise,” he added.

Anwar also announced that the next Parliament Sitting will start on Dec 19.
