KUCHING, Feb 2: Senator Abun Sui Anyit has called on the federal government to include Long Busang and Long Kajang residents in the distribution of RM1,000 flood relief assistance, stressing that they have yet to receive the aid despite suffering severe losses in the 2023 floods.

While expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the emergency aid provided to flood-affected household heads (KIR) in Sarawak, he urged authorities to ensure that those in Long Busang and Long Kajang are not left out.

“Despite a year passing, residents of Long Kajang have still not received relief aid,” he said in a statement today.

He was referring to Anwar’s recent announcement of a RM25 million allocation for the immediate repair of infrastructure damaged or destroyed by floods, landslides, and fires in Sabah and Sarawak, as well as RM1,000 cash aid for all families affected by these disasters.

Abun Sui also raised concerns over the unresolved housing situation for Long Kajang residents, whose longhouse was completely destroyed in two separate floods in 2023.

The community was forced to relocate to a new site on higher ground, but approval for the land has yet to be granted by the Sarawak Forestry Department.

“A nearby logging company is ready to level the land, but the necessary approvals have not been issued,” he revealed.

Calling for immediate intervention, Senator Abun Sui urged Sarawak government officials to expedite both the long-overdue flood aid and the housing site approval. — DayakDaily
