KUCHING, Oct 7: The Sarawak’s Local Authorities (PBT) are being urged to go beyond simply collecting and disposing of waste by exploring waste segregation, waste-to-energy initiatives and ways to turn waste into economic value.
According to a report by TVS, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said PBT had the authority to introduce local regulations and by-laws to strengthen waste management and promote more sustainable practices.
“At the local authority level, you can establish by-laws relating to waste segregation, waste-to-energy, generating economic value from waste, or whatever approach you wish to adopt, and you can play your respective roles,” he said speaking at the Green and Geopark Excellence Awards (GAGA) 2026 held at a hotel in Kuching yesterday (Oct 6).
Dr Sim said local action was crucial to strengthening waste management, with PBT having a key role in encouraging sustainable practices within communities.
He also urged relevant parties to make full use of their existing powers to introduce measures that could strengthen waste management practices.
He said such efforts should be continuous and not rely solely on policies formulated at higher levels, as local action was equally important in advancing the sustainability agenda.
He also urged PBT across Sarawak to sustain their efforts in improving waste management as part of the State’s broader sustainability agenda. — DayakDaily
