KUCHING, June 18: Hawker centres under the Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) jurisdiction still serving drinks using plastic straws from July 1 onwards will have their licenses withdrawn on the fourth offence.

MBKS mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the council would begin its rounds of spot checks at hawker centres starting July 1, and those found with plastic straws will be issued a notice immediately.

On the second offence, he continued, MBKS will be issuing a RM25 compound, and on the third offence, a RM50 compound.

Should operators be found using plastic straws again after that, their licenses shall be revoked.

“I think this is already very lenient. So, I hope everyone can work together.

“Protecting the Earth is not just the council or the government’s responsibility, it is everyone’s responsibility,” said Wee during his weekly ShallWeekTalk Facebook live session today.

He also said that the no plastic straw movement will begin with hawker centres under MBKS’ jurisdiction but is also encouraged in other restaurants and eateries in Kuching.

Wee expressed hope for hawker centres and eateries in southern Kuching to be free of plastic straws by the end of this year. — DayakDaily
