Plantation worker perishes in Niah after fire hits workers’ quarters

MIRI, Jan 20: A local worker working in an oil palm plantation died when a fire broke out inside his living quarters in Niah today.

The incident happened at an oil palm plantation at Batu Niah, about two hours from Miri city.

Batu Niah fire station chief Rary Binjie said the victim, identified as 22-year-old Anderson Mat Jonathan, was found inside his bedroom in the aftermath of the fire.

The body was then handed over to the police for further action.

“The structure of the quarters was destroyed in the incident,” he said.

The incident occurred around 2am, but the fire station only received the distress call at 9.50am.

The fire had also consumed a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle. — DayakDaily
