KUCHING, June 18: A big tourism project is underway on Bung Sadong, Serian, with plans to build a retreat similar to that on Bung Bratak, Serian District Council (MDS) chairman Dato Peter Minos revealed.

Taking a page from developing a hilltop nature retreat on Bung Bratak in Bau, Minos said the project on Bung Sadong will be bigger and slightly different in terms of concept and design.

“It is a big challenge for MDS, but we can do it, with the cooperation of locals, especially from Kampung Taee,” he said.

According to Minos, the project is thanks to the request by Tebedu assemblyman Dr Simon Sinang Bada and driven by calls from the local Bidayuh community to transform Bung Sadong into an iconic and beautiful hill tourism area.

He noted that the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) will finance the RM13.5 million project while the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) will be building access road to the project area.

He added that if local landowners agree to the road access plan, construction of the road is expected to be completed by June 2026. Once the road is ready, development of the project will begin, with preparatory work already underway.

“When completed, Bung Sadong will be a great and famous hill resort. It will attract tourists, both foreign and local,” Minos said.

He also highlighted that this project is part of wider efforts by the council and other agencies to transform Serian into an agriculture and tourism hub, echoing Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s vision of turning Serian into a “mini New Zealand”. – DayakDaily
