KUCHING, Feb 20: Newly-appointed Dewan Negara president Senator Datuk Mutang Tagal is a person of ethics, friendly and respects differences of opinion, says Sarawak Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

The party said before Mutang was appointed as the Dewan Negara Speaker, the latter was famous for his contributions to the local community especially in legal, political and business matters.

ā€œHe is a person of ethics, friendly with everyone and respects differences of opinion.

ā€œWe hope that Mutang will continue the efforts on parliamentary reforms together with Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, based on the aspirations of Malaysia Madani,ā€ the party said in a statement today.

In a separate statement, Sarawak Dayak Doctorate Degree Holders Association (SDDDHA) protem committee described Mutangā€™s appointment as a significant milestone in Malaysia politics and reflects the spirit of inclusivity that the Madani government under the leadership of Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim espouses.

ā€œSimilarly, greatest appreciation must also be rightly extended to Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg whose party ā€“ Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and the government he led, for recommending the first Dayak from the Lun Bawang tribe to hold such a high profile and important position in the nationā€™s government.

ā€œIt goes to show too that Sarawak under Abang Johari is slowly opening up to be more inclusive in governance and this will go well to maintain Sarawak as the model of good inter-ethnic relations and the spirit of multi-ethnic sharing.

ā€œWe are aware of the huge trust and responsibility placed upon Mutang in politics and governance during the post-normal period in Malaysia,ā€ said SDDDHA protem secretary-general Dr Ambrose Dango. ā€” DayakDaily
