KUCHING, June 19: Some community leaders and village chiefs (KMKK) have allegedly refused to sign letters of application from those who do not share their political ideology.
Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy secretary-general Tay Wei Wei@Naga Libau claimed he has received complaints about these leaders from villagers.
“Things like this should not happen in a parliamentary democracy with constitutional monarchy and Yang di-Pertuan Agong as the paramount ruler. The people have the right to make choices and support legitimate political parties in Malaysia.
“The role of the KMKK is to be ready to serve the local population by listening, solving the problems of the population and as a facilitator in a village or area under their supervision regardless of political affiliation,” he said in a statement today.
He further pointed out that KMKK receive a monthly allowance which is paid by the Sarawak government and also the federal government.
In fact, he said, the current unity government is now made up of 18 political parties consisting of Pakatan Harapan (PH), Barisan Nasional (BN), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and other parties for the sake of political stability and the welfare of the people.
“Therefore, I call upon the Residents and the District Officers to ensure that the appointed KMKK can carry out their responsibilities fairly and equitably, without bureaucracy.
“This practice should be stopped immediately and irresponsible KMKK should be replaced with more qualified and caring individuals so that the role of KMKK is more respected,” he added. — DayakDaily
