KUCHING, July 9: Pertubuhan Wartawan Bebas Kuching (Pewarta) is planning to organise a business reporting workshop aimed at equipping local journalists with the specialised knowledge and skills needed to effectively cover the business landscape.
Pewarta president Peter Sibon said the workshop is timely, as business journalism requires a distinct approach and technical understanding that differs from general news reporting.
“Through this workshop, journalists will be exposed to the fundamentals of writing business stories, which involve technical aspects and key business concepts that must be understood and accurately conveyed in their reporting,” he said in a statement today.
He added that the initiative will also enable journalists to play a greater role in informing the public about Sarawak’s economic development, particularly the State government’s efforts to transform Sarawak into a high-income region by 2030.
“We hope the business reporting workshop will provide a platform for journalists to sharpen their reporting skills, learn how to write compelling business news and proposals, exchange ideas, and enhance their overall understanding of the business environment,” Peter said.
He also encouraged local journalists to take full advantage of the opportunity, which is part of Pewarta’s ongoing efforts to elevate the standards of journalism in Sarawak.
Earlier today, Peter, accompanied by Pewarta auditor Adrian Lim, paid a courtesy call on Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn to brief him on the workshop to be held later this year and to extend an invitation for him to attend as a guest-of-honour.
During the meeting, Sagah presented a financial contribution to support the workshop’s organisation.
Pewarta also expressed its heartfelt appreciation to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for allocating RM35,000 to support the initiative. — DayakDaily
