KUCHING, March 7: PetrosNiaga Sdn Bhd, the retail LPG arm of Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros), is working closely with Pusaka Integrated Resources Sdn Bhd (PIRSB) to establish a temporary liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) bottling plant in Bintulu to address the supply needs of Northern Sarawak.

In a media release today, Petros emphasised that this facility will produce up to 50 per cent of the existing plant’s original capacity and is expected to be operational by early April.

The move follows a landslide at the PIRSB LPG Bottling Plant in Bintulu on Jan 29, which halted operations to prioritise the safety of the surrounding community. Restoration efforts for the existing plant are ongoing and are expected to take up to six months.

In the interim, PetrosNiaga is implementing several measures to ensure minimal supply disruption in the northern region.

The Senari Independent Oil Terminal (IOT) in Kuching has ramped up production from a daily average of 13,000 cylinders to approximately 26,000 cylinders—enough to meet Sarawak’s daily demand of 25,000 cylinders.

This effort is reinforced by contingency plans, including the establishment of a depot for additional storage capacity in the northern region.

To enhance supply in high-demand areas such as Miri, Bintulu, and Sibu, the number of transporters and LPG cylinders has been significantly increased, ensuring faster and more consistent deliveries.

Additionally, PetrosNiaga is securing extra LPG supply from Sepanggar Bay in Sabah to reinforce supply to Northern Sarawak, with the situation expected to stabilise within a week.

The price of subsidised household LPG remains unchanged at RM26.60 per cylinder when collected from authorised distributors and dealers.

Consumers are encouraged to report any unauthorised price increases or extra charges to PetrosNiaga’s Customer Service at 1300-88-2122 or the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) at 1-800-886-800 or via WhatsApp at 019-8488000.

PetrosNiaga remains committed to ensuring a steady and reliable supply of LPG across Sarawak.

Customers are advised to purchase LPG as per their usual requirements and avoid unnecessary panic buying, as efforts are in place to ensure households and businesses continue to have access to an affordable and stable energy source. — DayakDaily
