MIRI, Oct 24: Petronas is striving to implement holistic and sustainable corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes focusing on community wellbeing, education and environment.

“Our CSR’s primary focus is on addressing the needs of the local communities,” said Zaki Hashim, the general manager of the Technical Services Department, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd Sarawak Oil (SK Oil), at the prize-giving ceremony for the Petronas-NSJA Bowling friendly tournament here on Tuesday.

Citing the recent example of a media familiarisation trip to Petronas’s project site at the Miri-Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park, Zaki said the press gave very good coverage of the trip.

“Your stories on the project has successfully raised the level of public awareness on the conservation and protection of our precious coral reefs from destruction by illegal fishing activities.

“We hope you will continue to write more stories on this project to educate the public on the importance of marine conservation and the economic benefits that this project can bring to Miri’s economy and the fishing community,” he said.

Zaki also applauded newsmen in Miri for highlighting the initiatives undertaken by Petronas and its partners to enhance the wellbeing of the local community, improve education and conserve the environment in Sarawak over the years.

About 20 local journalists, including Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) president Andy Jong, and Petronas’ staff were at the prize-giving ceremony. Early yesterday, some 30 bowlers from NSJA and Petronas took part in a friendly competition.
