KUCHING, Feb 25: The Sarawak government has clarified that the court ruling involving Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) is strictly a commercial matter between the two entities and does not impact the State’s petition in the Federal Court seeking legal clarity on Sarawak’s rights.
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news, Deputy Minister in the Premier of Sarawak’s Department (Law, MA63, and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, emphasised that the public should understand the distinction between the two matters.
“The PETROS-PETRONAS case is a commercial dispute brought to court by the companies themselves, and its outcome is one that we, as citizens, must respect.
“However, it has no bearing on Sarawak’s Federal Court petition, which seeks legal interpretation and certainty on the jurisdictional rights between the State and the Federation. These are separate matters, and the commercial case will not influence our petition,” she said after officiating the handover ceremony for the RM4.9 million Taman Sukma Hall Project today.
Sharifah Hasidah reaffirmed that the Sarawak government remains committed to pursuing legal channels to clarify the State’s rights, ensuring transparency and avoiding public confusion on the matter.
“This is reflected in the State government’s consistent efforts to uphold the rights of the people of Sarawak under the MA63,” she added.
Highlighting the Taman Sukma Hall project, she noted that it exemplifies the government’s commitment to community development across Sarawak, regardless of location.
The new hall provides modern facilities for social, community, and meeting activities, including amenities for Persons with Disabilities (PWD).
“With this hall, the Taman Sukma community will have a modern, high-quality space for a variety of community activities. It is equipped with meeting rooms, offices, and PWD-friendly facilities to ensure comfort for all users,” she said.
The handover ceremony was also attended by the Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Datuk Hilmy Othman, along with other dignitaries. — DayakDaily
