KUCHING, Aug 1: Petra Jaya in Kuching North City Commission (DBKU)’s jurisdiction and Kenyalang Park in Kuching City South Council (MBKS) will be turned into nature reserves as part of urban planning to provide sustainable living for city folks.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg believed that urban planning which incorporates a green environment and proper town planning is important to create a sustainable living for people in the city centre.

“Recently, I have approved an area in DBKU to be turned into a nature reserve.

“It will be an area which is connected to the back of the State Library where local plants and trees will be planted and provide a recreational area for the people.

“This of course will provide a green environment for Kuchingites to enjoy besides beautifying the main roads in DBKU towards an established and sustainable living for Kuching city.

“The same goes to MBKS where the Local Government and Housing Ministry has contacted me and I think they want to improve Kenyalang Park.

“In city, there should be some places which are environmentally friendly to the people,” he said in his speech during the 33rd Anniversary of Kuching City Day celebration today.

He added the beautification work will be carried out towards Padawan area and subsequently to Kota Sentosa in 7th Mile in efforts to build a sustainable city in the Kuching Division.

Abang Johari disclosed that beautification work will also be implemented in Padawan areas as the State government has recently approved some allocation to the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).

He emphasised that sustainability was one of the development agendas by the State government in Sarawak post Covid-19 Development Strategy towards a high income and developed State by 2030.
