KUCHING, April 12: Pet owners in Kuching South have been put on notice: strict enforcement against rabies non-compliance will begin this year, with no more tolerance for excuses.

This was the clear message delivered by Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng during an anti-rabies vaccination and pet licensing campaign held at MBKS Community Hall, Jalan Padungan this morning.

“Since 2019, we’ve increased awareness, ramped up campaigns—from once a year to now five times annually. There’s no reason left for anyone to say they didn’t know [about their responsibilities regarding rabies prevention].

“Starting this year, the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS) and MBKS will begin enforcement. No more excuses,” he said.

Wee noted that last year, the council imposed only minimum penalties for non-compliance.

“This year, we’re not going to do that anymore. If you’re a pet owner, you must be responsible. Don’t expect us to tell you when we’ll enforce—just be prepared,” he stated.

Today’s campaign, which included vaccination, licensing, microchipping, and subsidised neutering, saw a strong turnout, with over 80 dogs vaccinated and more than 50 licenses issued by 9.30am.

Wee also warned that pet owners who allow their animals to roam freely, especially at night, risk action from the council.

“If we receive a report, we will act. If we don’t, the people will blame us for not working. But when we do act, we get blamed too. So what do you want?.

“We’ve been fair, we understand pet owners, but this is about public safety. Do you want lives to be lost, or do you want your pets to be out roaming like strays?” he questioned.

Wee added that responsible pet ownership is no different from being a responsible citizen.

“You can’t expect others to clean up your mess. If your pet causes harm, the victim could be anyone—your child, your parent, your neighbor. Who will you blame then?” – DayakDaily
