SIBU, Sept 6: The Ministry of Health (KKM) and the Sarawak government have been urged to address several pressing challenges faced by the 30-year-old Sibu Hospital.
Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Senior Vice President Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh emphasised that the time has come to improve the hospital’s condition.
“If the Federal government cannot assist directly, the Sarawak government can step in to provide some support to the hospital,” Wong said, recalling his involvement in the hospital’s construction three decades ago.
Wong, who is also Bawang Assan assemblyman, noted that after 30 years, the hospital’s facilities are deteriorating and in need of extensive repairs.
Despite these challenges, Wong commended the hospital’s efforts under the leadership of its director, Dr Nanthakumar Thirunavukkarasu, for doing their best despite the lack of manpower and infrastructure.
“They face many challenges, including a shortage of staff and outdated infrastructure, but the hospital staff have worked tirelessly to provide the best care possible,” Wong explained.
He added that feedback from staff indicates that doctors and nurses are experiencing high levels of fatigue and stress due to the staffing shortage, though they continue to perform their duties commendably.
Parking issues at the hospital were also highlighted as a serious concern that requires attention.
Sibu Hospital, the second-largest hospital in Sarawak, serves as a referral hospital for the central zone of the state. It supports eight to 10 district hospitals and 20 health clinics.
Additionally, it functions as the main hospital for the Central Zone Cluster, which includes Kapit, Kanowit, and Daro Hospitals.
Currently, the hospital has 662 beds and a staff of 2,012 as of June 2024. — DayakDaily
