KUCHING, Sept 29: Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Dato Sri Tiong King Sing congratulated the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition for successfully defending its state seat in the Mahkota by-election in Johor yesterday (Sept 28).
In a statement today, Tiong said he has been monitoring by-election updates despite being abroad.
“It was not an easy battle, and without everyone sharing the same goal, the outcome could have been very different.
“Mahkota voters’ warm hospitality and feedback received during my time in Kluang, your support made this win possible,” he wrote on social media.
Tiong who is the Federal Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) further said with all Mahkota voters supporting the unity government, he looked forward to returning to Kluang to work with everyone and continuing to pursue future development for the people and tourism opportunities.
According to the official results, BN’s first-time candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah garnered 27,995 votes in a straight fight with former Johor footballer and Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Mohamad Haizan Jaafar who secured 7,347 votes.
The Sept 28 by-election was called following the death of its assemblywoman Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain in August.
She had won the seat in the Johor state election in March 2022 by a majority of 5,166 votes in a four-corner fight with candidates from Pakatan Harapan (PH), PN and Warisan. — DayakDaily
