KUCHING, May 19: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) component parties have been urged to safeguard unity and avoid infighting so as not to give the opposition the opportunity to build their strength and gain the upper hand.

This was said by Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Dato Seri Tiong King Sing in a Facebook post following a pre-Gawai Dayak celebration he attended on Sunday night (May 18).

Speaking on the celebration, the Bintulu MP said it demonstrated unity and harmony among the various ethnic groups in Sarawak, adding to the State’s uniqueness.

Tiong, who is also Dudong assemblyman and the Malaysian Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, said that only by embracing the spirit of unity can the rights of all races be ensured, which will foster the development of a stable society, especially in rural areas.

He said the same applies to politics and urged GPS component parties to uphold the concepts of mutual trust and cooperation and must never attempt to attack or undermine one another, which would not only damage internal unity but could also erode grassroots support for GPS.

“We must not look up to the sky and assume that our party is strong, neglecting our collective awareness and causing a ‘crack’ in the spirit of unity—something that could become an ‘opportunity’ for opposition parties to build their strength. Never forget that our confidence stems from the people’s support—do not become arrogant after gaining power.

“Instead, we must show wise leadership and guide party members to carry out their duties well and serve the people. If not, we will simply be cast aside by the people and eventually thrown into the ‘tong sampah’ (rubbish bin),” he said. — DayakDaily
