PBM president: Malaysia’s ‘subsidy addiction’ gone on for too long with many leakages, flaws

KUCHING, Oct 14: Malaysia’s ‘subsidy addiction’ has gone on for too long with many leakages and flaws, says Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) president Datuk Larry Sng Wei Shien.

The Julau MP, in a Facebook post yesterday (Oct 13), said he believes the government could have gone further to address the matter and go beyond just chicken and eggs by floating other essential goods like cooking oil, sugar, and rice.

“There are other means to channel assistance to the poor by direct cash handouts or food coupons.

“I strongly believe that subsidies should be gradually phased out,” he said.

Sng said that overall, he welcomes the Budget 2024 announced by Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

“Particularly on the need to address issues related to subsidies,” he said. — DayakDaily
