KUCHING, Feb 26: Sarawak does not need politicians from Peninsula Malaysia interfering in its political landscape through local proxies, says Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) president Datuk Larry Sng.
Sng stressed that PBM’s political stance in Sarawak differs significantly from that of Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders in Sarawak.
“We are not looking to replace Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS). In fact, we support GPS’ ‘Sarawak First’ policy and its push for greater autonomy—perhaps even beyond what has been achieved so far.
“Sarawak is politically strong and financially stable. We are very different from the rest of the country, so there is no need for national parties like PH or Perikatan Nasional (PN) to exert control over Sarawak through elections,” he said in a statement on social media today.
Sng further argued that GPS plays a crucial role in ensuring stability at the federal level.
He suggested that PH should refrain from contesting in Sarawak’s next State election and allow local Sarawak-based parties to compete and serve as the check and balance.
“Sarawakian leaders from all parties should strengthen Sarawak’s interest so that they can achieve better bargaining position for the State when dealing with the federal government,” he added.
His remarks appeared to be aimed at Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sarawak leaders, who had recently criticised him for suggesting that the party had no future in Sarawak and should consider aligning with GPS—particularly since Prime Minister and PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim relies on GPS’ support at the federal level.
This followed a statement by PKR Sarawak information chief Senator Abun Sui Anyit, who dismissed the notion that the party should sit out the next Sarawak election.
He argued that if PKR Sarawak were truly weak, there would be no reason for anyone to fear its participation.
Abun Sui also took aim at Sng—who defected from PKR—urging him to stay out of PKR Sarawak’s affairs, as the party would make its own decisions independently.
During a meeting on Sunday (Feb 23), PH Sarawak reaffirmed that PKR Sarawak will contest in the upcoming state election, which must be held by July 2026.— DayakDaily
