PBDSB dares MACC chief Latheefa to go after ‘big fishes’ in Sarawak

William Mangor

KUCHING, June 5: Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDSB) hopes newly minted Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Latheefa Koya will make it her top priority to reopen investigations into the “corridors of power” in Sarawak.

“In order to show that she is firm and will act fairly as the head of MACC, she must act without fear and favour. There are a lot of ‘big fishes’ in Sarawak, so what we hope is that she will not ‘miss’ it,” said PBDSB information chief William Mangor in a statement today.

On Latheefa’s appointment, William remarked it would bring a new dawn for Malaysia, especially in combating corruption.

He opined that Putrajaya’s decision to appoint her as the new MACC chief was “a right move” as Latheefa is known for her fearless and no-nonsense approach.

Latheefa is a human rights lawyer and was a Lawyers for Liberty executive director before her appointment as the nation’s top graft buster effective June 1 on a contract basis for a two-year period.

She was also Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) supreme council member.

Due to her political background, Wiliam said whatever decision or action she took might be questioned by the public.

“The Pakatan Harapan (PH) government needs to explain why it appointed Latheefa, as its general election (GE14) manifesto stated that the appointment of the MACC commissioner should go through Parliament first.

“If they fail to explain, this will reflect badly on the federal government,” cautioned William. — DayakDaily
