KUCHING, Sept 25: Sarawak para swimmer Galang Jabai set a new meet record in the 50-metre freestyle S7 event at the Para Malaysia Games (Para Sukma) yesterday (Sept 24), thus winning the gold medal.
The 38-year-old clocked a time of 34.59 seconds in the event held at Pandelela Rinong Aquatics Centre here, erasing the previous record of fellow Sarawakian Mohd Zambey Sapiee, who clocked 45.86s at the 2010 edition.
Kedah’s Muhammad Syafiq Azman bagged the silver medal with a time of 37.53s while Penang’s Muhammad Ikmal Danial Abdul Rahim settled for bronze with 43.09s.
This is Galang’s third gold medal after winning the 4x100m freestyle relay 34 points event alongside teammates Fraidden Dawan, Mully Andriano and Rusdianto Rusmadi with a time of 5 minutes and 3.63 seconds; as well as men’s 100m freestyle S7 event.
Today, Galang won two silver medals in the men’s 200m medley SM7/SM8 and 50m butterfly S6/S7 events.
This brings the total medal count for Sarawak’s para swimming team to 12 gold, 11 silver and nine bronze as of today.
The para swimming events will continue until tomorrow (Sept 26) with 15 more gold medals up for grabs. — DayakDaily
