Para Sukma 2024: Sarawak swimming team shines with 17 gold, 13 silver, 11 bronze medals

KUCHING, Sept 26: The Sarawak para swimming team emerged as champions, clinching a total of 17 gold, 13 silver, and 11 bronze medals in the swimming events at the 21st Para Malaysia Games (Para Sukma 2024) Sarawak 2024.

The four-day aquatic competition, held from Sept 23 to 26, concluded today, with 27 new meet records set, including 12 new national records.

Five Sarawakians etched their names in the record books: Fraidden Dawan, Mully Andriano, Rusdianto Rusmadi, Galang Jabai, and Mohd Adib Iqbal Abdullah.

The latest record was set in today’s team event (Sept 26), where Fraidden Dawan, Mully Andriano, Rusdianto Rusmadi, and Galang Jabai clocked 5:31.77 in the Men’s 4x100m Medley, shaving off four seconds from the previous Para Sukma record of 5:36.20.

On September 25, Rusdianto set two new records in the Men’s 200m Medley SM7/SM8 (2:49.02) and Men’s 100m Backstroke S7/S8 (1:18.68).

He also secured a gold medal in the Men’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay 34 points event.

Galang Jabai, aged 38, made waves by clocking 34.59 seconds in the Men’s 50m Freestyle S7, breaking the previous record of 45.86 seconds set by Mohd Zambey Sapiee in 2010. Galang also won gold in the 4x100m Freestyle Relay 34 points alongside Fraidden, Mully, and Rusdianto, as well as in the Men’s 100m Freestyle S7 event.

Meanwhile, on Sept 24, Mohd Adib Iqbal Abdullah broke the Men’s 100m Breaststroke SB14 record with a time of 1:11.44.

Fraidden Dawan made an impressive splash, winning a total of six gold medals in Para Sukma XXII, four in individual events and two in team categories.

Other Sarawakian gold medalists in the para swimming events included Mohd Osman Zainal, Alving Wong Jun Ming, Sereen Lulong Jawi, and Shenna Ung Xin Ying.

With the conclusion of the Para swimming events, the Sarawak swimming team ended their campaign with 17 gold medals, surpassing their target by two, after competing in a total of 51 events. — DayakDaily
