KUCHING, Jan 20: Efforts to revitalise Chinatown on Jalan Padungan are progressing, with ongoing improvements and the Padungan roundabout next in line for enhancement.
Speaking during the light-switching ceremony at the Padungan White Cat Statue today, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the council has fulfilled its promise to enhance the iconic area, made a year ago.
āWe walk the talk; we have delivered. Please feel free to go around and see the difference.
“The next focus will be the Padungan roundabout. āWe will try to do whatever we can,ā he said, emphasising that the council generates its funds through assessments and continues to seek external funding for such projects.
Wee also noted that Padungan is gradually transforming into a vibrant street food hub, rejuvenating its identity as āChinatown.ā
āWeāre starting to awaken this Chinatown, and the community is coming together,ā he said, praising the strong engagement from local tenants, many of whom have donated lanterns to illuminate the streets and foster a sense of community spirit.
A notable milestone will be the official launch of 200 lanterns in Tabuan Jaya tomorrow (Jan 21), which will be installed around the area, including at the Song Swee Guan Park.
The council has also received positive responses from other local businesses, with Bintawa Market expressing interest in participating in the celebrations.
āThis is a collective effort. We want to see more places lit up during this Chinese New Year,ā Wee said, emphasising that city development isnāt just the responsibility of the government, but requires active participation from the public.
Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili expressed that MBKS recognised the importance of inclusivity, noting that the council celebrates not only Chinese New Year but also the upcoming fasting month, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, and Gawai Dayak, among other events.
āThis is our celebration, not just for a particular race or religion, but for everyone. In MBKS, we celebrate all cultures, and through this, we show our unity and respect for the traditions and religions of all communities,ā he said.
