KUCHING, Dec 13: The White Cat at Padungan donned new Christmas attire last night as the iconic statue was lit up, ushering in festive celebrations in Kuching.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the White Cat, a symbol of Kuching, reflects Sarawak’s long-standing spirit of unity where people celebrate each other’s festivals together.

“At every occasion, we come together to celebrate by changing the costumes. This is basically the Sarawak spirit,” he said during the lighting-up ceremony at the Padungan roundabout last night (Dec 12).

Dr Sim said Kuching’s reputation as the City of Unity is built on daily practice, reminding the public not to take peace for granted at a time when many parts of the world are facing conflict.

He wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy 2026, and welcomed Sarawakians returning home for the festive season.

Meanwhile, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the White Cat is wearing a new costume this year in line with the council’s message that no one is left behind during festive celebrations.

“When we talk about lighting, we are talking about light against darkness. I hope Kuchingites and Sarawakians can be the light for others,” he said.

He also called on Sarawakians to protect the harmony they enjoy and not allow external influences to disrupt unity in the State.

MBKS deputy mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili said unity, mutual respect for cultures and religions are practised daily in Sarawak and not limited to festive seasons.

“This is the factor that strengthens our community and is part of our nation-building,” he said, extending Christmas and New Year greetings to the public.

At the same time, MBKS councillor Roy Percival Rentap Mason who represented the Christian community, also expressed hope for continued unity and prosperity in Sarawak, while praying for wisdom for the State’s leaders.

The lighting-up ceremony marked the start of Christmas celebrations in Kuching, with the White Cat once again standing as a symbol of unity, peace and harmony in Sarawak. — DayakDaily
