KUCHING, Dec 21: Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen has asked Sesco to give a full explanation of the power outage which hit Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri today.

In a press statement issued today, Chong, the chairman of the Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP), said that since Sarawak is set on establishing itself as an energy powerhouse in Southeast Asia, it is ‘unacceptable’ to have incidents of Statewide power outages.

He added that this reflects a lack of electricity reserves, alternative supply mechanisms, and contingency plans.

Furthermore, he lamented that such incidents have been growing more frequently, affecting only isolated areas initially.

“Sesco, as the sole power supplier in the State, cannot just apologise without telling us Sarawakians what happened and what was the cause,” said the Stampin MP.

At the same time, Chong posed the question of whether resources have been overly focused on hydrogen power development, leading to the neglect of other forms of power generation.

“I urge the government to hold a thorough investigation and make public the investigation findings,” he said. — DayakDaily
