KUCHING, June 29: Over 5,000 out of 75,000 traders and hawkers in Sarawak are still using bank accounts and not e-wallets, namely the S Pay Global app.
The Sarawak Hawkers and Traders Association Kuching branch chairman Chang Hot Chai said the figures were mentioned by Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian when the latter attended the Sarawak Traders Federation event organised on Monday (June 27).
“He (Dr Sim) pointed out there are at least 75,000 small hawkers in Sarawak, of which more than 50,000 of these hawkers use S Pay Global. It can be seen that the hawkers have changed with the times.
“This spirit is commendable. However, there are still more than 5,000 traders who still use bank accounts. In addition, there are about 8,000 hawkers who went to the city council to receive the special BKSS aid.
“So, he hopes that the hawkers can learn to master technology to face the challenges in the future,” said Chang in a statement today.
He said the association was also urged to recruit more members of other ethnic groups.
Other dignitaries included the association’s president Dato Voon Chin Leong and advisor Dato Sim Kiang Chiok, 38 Food Street representative Dato Sri Chan Ling Shan, and Penghulu Tommy Thain. — DayakDaily
