KUCHING, Sept 14: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has torn down a staggering 5,138 illegal moneylender advertisements between January and August this year, underscoring its relentless crackdown on unlicensed lending activities.
Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the figures speak for themselves and refute claims that the council has been idle in addressing the issue.
“From January to August this year, we have removed 5,138 illegal moneylender advertisements. So, to those who think we are not doing anything, the numbers prove otherwise,” he stressed during his weekly ShallWeeTalk Facebook live session yesterday (Sept 13).
Wee emphasised that tackling illegal moneylender advertisements is not solely the responsibility of the council but also requires active participation from the community.
He revealed that a friend of his had taken the initiative to help by tearing down such advertisements voluntarily.
“He told me, ‘Dato, this is what I can do to help.’ He doesn’t want his name revealed, but he has gone around removing the advertisements on his own. This shows that when the community works together, we can tackle this problem more effectively,” Wee shared.
He called on the public to treat this as a daily challenge by removing these illegal advertisements whenever spotted, instead of waiting for the council to act.
“If every person removes just one illegal advertisement in their neighbourhood every day, one day these illegal lenders will stop putting them up. Let’s work together to protect our city and its surroundings,” he urged. — DayakDaily
