KUCHING, Sept 12: The Orang Ulu National Association (OUNA) has requested an increase in the quota for leadership positions within the Orang Ulu community.

In a news report by TVS, OUNA president Dato Dr Abu Bakar Abdullah stated that their proposal has received the support from Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar following a courtesy visit to the Astana Negeri today.

“Our delegation received a favourable response from Tun (Wan Junaidi) and this also reflects that the Orang Ulu community is united and closely knit,” he said when met by reporters.

Abu Bakar expressed hope that increasing the quota will enhance the visibility and respect for the Orang Ulu community.

The highest position previously held by the Orang Ulu was the Speaker of the Dewan Negara, occupied by the late Datuk Mutang Tagal until his passing on May 10, 2024.

Abu Bakar emphasised that the Orang Ulu community is committed to supporting capable and deserving leaders.

“Let’s maintain our strong rapport among Sarawakians and prioritise our safety,” he urged.

He also affirmed that the Orang Ulu community is dedicated to a harmonious and civilised society in Sarawak, regardless of race. — DayakDaily
