KUCHING, Sept 10: The Federal government will provide remuneration and facilities equivalent to that of a Minister to Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
This was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in a statement today.
He said the offer was among seven reforms under the Federal government’s Transformation of Parliament and Government Administration.
The others include tabling the Anti-Party Hopping Bill in Parliament, implementing Undi18 in the near future, limiting the prime minister’s tenure to 10 years, balance of membership of the Parliamentary Select Committee involving Government MPs and Opposition MPs, negotiating and reaching consensus before tabling every Bill including the Supply Bill in Parliament, as well as involving Opposition party members in the National Recovery Council (MPN) to provide views and suggestions for improvement.
A similar offer to provide remuneration and facilities to the Opposition leader was made by former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Aug 13, 2021 in exchange for support during a motion of confidence vote involving the Prime Minister in the Dewan Rakyat.
However, the offer was turned down by the Opposition bloc, which described Muhyiddin’s offer as “hypocritical, insincere” and was made by Muhyiddin to stay on as Prime Minister after losing his majority support in Parliament. — DayakDaily
