KUCHING, Feb 18: Malaysia’s rankings in cellular download speed has been superceded by neighbouring countries due to late its adoption of the 5G mobile broadband standard, according to the latest report by Opensignal.

The report titled ‘5G Impact On The Global Mobile Network Experience’ said some countries that had been behind Malaysia and Singapore as of 2019 now have faster cellular download speed courtesy of their earlier 5G rollout.

“In early 2019, Singapore ranked fifth for average download speed out of 100 markets but had fallen to ninth place by late 2021.

“Malaysia fell from 61st to 70th in the same period, with 5G services only arriving at the end of 2021 as part of the single 5G wholesale network (Digital Nasional Berhad or DNB),” said Ian Fogg, VP Analysis and author of the report.

The report showed that Malaysia’s mobile user average download speed standing is at only 13.5 megabit per second (Mbps), below the average enjoyed by users of networks in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Data collected by Opensignal also indicated that mobile user experience in these countries, as compared to in Malaysia, have had substantial improvements over the past two-and-a-half years, partly due to the preparation and introduction of 5G.

Malaysia’s ranking in terms of games experience, however, was not so bad as it scored 61.9 on a 100-point scale, which put it in joint 43rd place across 100 global markets in Q4’2021.

This means most markets including Malaysia has yet to feel the impact of not having 5G A when gaming.
