One week jail, RM2k fine for man who attempted to steal ground wire

KUCHING, Sept 25: A jobless man was sentenced to jail for a week and fined RM2,000 in default of two weeks jail by the Magistrate’s Court here for attempting to steal a ground wire.

Magistrate Nuruhuda Mohd Yusof passed the sentence on 26-year-old Mohammad Azhar Umar after he pleaded guilty to the charge here, today.


According to the charge sheet, Mohammad Azhar was accused of trying to steal ground wire belonging to Sarawak Energy Bhd in front of the house of former Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) mayor, Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai, at Demak Jaya, at about 8.45pm on Sept 17, 2019.

He was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 511 and Section 34 of the Penal Code, which provides a maximum seven-year jail time and fine, upon conviction.

Prosecuting Officer Insp Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted, while the accused is unrepresented by counsel. — DayakDaily
