KUCHING, Jan 3: The launch of AirBorneo marks a defining moment for Sarawak, with political pundit Dato Peter Minos describing the State-owned airline as a powerful symbol of confidence, progress and pride that few could have imagined even a decade ago.

In a statement today, Minos noted that the sight of an AirBorneo aircraft in the skies represents more than a commercial operation, but reflects Sarawak itself taking flight with renewed confidence.

The idea of the State owning its own airline, he observed, was once far beyond what many Sarawakians could have envisaged.

“Who would have thought that in 2026 Sarawak can own an airline. Not in my contemplation. Not in my wildest dream,” he said.

Beyond its symbolic value, Minos highlighted the airline’s practical role in driving development, pointing out that improved air connectivity has far reaching effects on business growth, tourism, social cohesion and overall prosperity across the State.

Looking ahead, he drew attention to Sarawak’s long term aviation ambitions, including the proposed new airport at Tanjung Embang, off Asajaya, which is expected to position the State as a stronger regional aviation hub and potentially open pathways for international routes in the future.

He also expressed hope that AirBorneo would prioritise the interests of Sarawakians by offering affordable fares, particularly during festive seasons, noting that high ticket prices have long been a burden for local travellers.

Placing AirBorneo in a wider development context, Minos said the airline adds to a growing list of Sarawak firsts under the State government, including the establishment of the Development Bank of Sarawak (DBOS) and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS), free tertiary education, the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR), ownership stakes in a commercial bank, four Sarawak-based universities and a State television station.

He observed that these milestones have gradually reshaped how Sarawak is perceived, both within and beyond the State, contributing to a stronger sense of self belief among Sarawakians.

“In the past people looked down on Sarawak. Now and especially by 2030, Sarawak may be more advanced and progressive, far beyond our imagination,” he said.

Minos concluded that AirBorneo symbolises a deeper shift in mindset, reflecting growing confidence that Sarawak is capable of achieving what others have achieved and charting its own path forward. — DayakDaily
