KUCHING, Jan 18: Rabies, once it reaches the brain, is past the point of being cured—guaranteeing a painful, horrible death.

In a press release today, Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Dato Peter Minos said those who contract rabies from infected animals die a “horrible and extremely painful death”, making it all the more important to prevent it from ever happening.

“Once bitten by an animal, immediately wash the wound with water and soap and only then go to a clinic,” he said, adding that it is basic knowledge which everyone must know.

Meanwhile, the press release said that the council organised an anti-rabies programme at the Open University Malaysia (OUM) compound today.

The programme was organised in collaboration with other agencies such as OUM, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), the Department Of Veterinary Services Sarawak, the Sarawak Health Department, and associations.

It was attended by members of the public, which included parents and their children, and offered services such as dog registration and rabies vaccinations.

“MPKS organises talks and dialogues annually in Samarahan to warn residents of the rabies menace and how to prevent it, and children are invited with their parents for such talks.

“We don’t want Samarahan residents to be complacent. One rabies death is bad and that’s already too many. Public health is our concern and we must do our part,” he said. — DayakDaily
